New study: portly boomers court early demise

"The new NCI study showed a 20% to 40% increase in the risk of death for healthy people with no history of smoking even if they were only overweight at age 50. If they were obese, they were two to three times as likely to die during the study's 10-year follow-up."

In Australia: booze-addled boomers stumble towards retirement

Forget the image of binge-drinking teenagers: it is their parents that are the nation's real alcohol abusers.

In only 10 years, risky and highly risky drinking levels among baby boomers approaching retirement have soared, overtaking the level of abuse among young people.

More than 15 per cent of 45- to 64-year-olds now drink at levels considered highly risky: seven or more drinks a day for men and five for women."
